    The differences between the numbers go, 3, 1, 5. The differences between them are 2 and 4. Presumably the next one would be 6, which means that the next difference between the numbers in the sequence would be 11 (5 + 6) meaning that the next number would be 9 + 11, i.e. 20.

    (I might have overthought this).
