Why are all manhole covers round and not square?

So they fit over the whole, and cover it if they were square they would lay on top.
The square cover can fall into the hole, with round cover it’s impossible, and I guess easier to produce round cover. (in my contry we have round (majority) and square manhole covers as well)

A round cover could never fall into the hole by mistake, whereas a square cover could be turned at the proper angle and be inserted into the hole by hooligans.
