Australia was there and inhabited well before Cook sailed to it. The argument comes to what is an island? Australia is a continent and it could be argued that larger Antarctica is an island too. So perhaps the correct answer is Greenland. The largest island that is not a continent.

The answer we’re looking for is: Australia was still the biggest island in the world even prior to Cook’s discovering it.
