Trip to the Attic

There are three switches downstairs. Each corresponds to one of the three light bulbs in the attic. You can turn the switches on and off and leave them in any position.
How would you identify which switch corresponds to which light bulb, if you are only allowed one trip upstairs?

Go up to the attic once with three different light bulbs and screw them into specific sockets: left – standard white, middle – yellow and right – red. Go back downstairs and with each switch look to see what color of light is coming from the attic.

Very creative Paul, but not the answer we were looking for. Pretend that you cannot see the light coming from the attic and try again. The answer is really quite simple.

  • Paul

Turn on one switch for five minutes then turn it off. Flip a second switch and run up to the attic. As long as you don’t stop for a beer before running up, the light that’s off but warm to the touch is the first switch. The light on is the second and the light off is the switch you didn’t flip.

  • Keep the first bulb switched on for a few minutes. It gets warm, right? So all you have to do then is … switch it off, switch another one on, walk into the room with bulbs, touch them and tell which one was switched on as the first one (the warm one) and the others can be easily identified.

Paul, you guessed it correctly. Congratulations you’re today’s winner!!!

  • Congratulations Paul, you’re right!!!

    You are today’s winner.

  • Leave them all in the same position downstairs and go upstairs and flip each switch until the light comes on.

Switch on one light bulb at a time and if it is warm. Do the same with the other two light bulbs while you are still upstairs in the room and see if each one stays warm.

  • AJ

Get a friend to go upstairs and shout which one is on

  • Because I think we should have already keep our lights on Incase a villan steals something precious
