Two Posts

Two vertical 750 ft posts have a 1000 ft rope stretched between their topmost points. The rope sags to within 250 ft from the ground. How far apart are the posts?

  • Paul

If the rope dropped 500′ from the first pole in order to sag 250′ from the ground, and since the rope is 1,000′ long, it would also need to drop 500′ from the second pole, meaning the two poles are next to eachother.

  • You are correct, Paul!

The poles are 0 ft away from each other. The rope sags 500ft from the top of the post to make it 250ft above the ground. Since the rope is 1000 it must be folded directly in half which would happen only if the two posts were right next to each other.

    You sir, are today’s winner.

  • the poles are not far enough away from each other at all
