Hmm, something you might have, but don’t want, and are forced to keep the ones you can’t catch and throw away. Having kids my first thought was lice. In middle age, white hairs also came to mind. Mouse? Oh, house flies! Fruit flies. A train conductor might think hobo’s, or ships captain may say stow away. A bouncer might think “minors”.
Crabman, you are today’s winner!
Lice
I’m still surprised it was my first guess: lice. I liked house flies or fruit flies better. Between my kids I’ve dealt with lice 3 times. Last was just a couple months ago. The wife would use a fine comb to search for as many as she could find, I even helped once. Thank god we have lice shampoo these day so keeping any is not a viable option! In the time an “ancient” riddle was written I presume they had no lice shampoo. Ick!
