I have a roll of cloth one mile long.
I have a machine which cuts this roll into pieces of ten meters each.

How long would it take for the machine to cut the roll if each cut took four seconds?

  640 seconds
  1 mile = 1609.34 meters
  @ ten meters apiece, there will be 161 pieces. To obtain 161 pieces, you need to make 160 cuts. Since each cut takes 4 seconds, total time taken is 640 seconds

  4 seconds seeing as you are cutting the roll. If you are cutting pieces off of the roll one at a time, it would take 643.736 seconds by my calculations.
