I presume this is a riddle and not a counting exercise, so I wont even bother with that.
Two options:
– 0: He’s painting the doors
– 1: He only paints 8, on room 8, once. The number 88 does not equal two 8s
As I was waiting in line at Subway (6″ Turkey & Ham on Italian) I realize the counting exercise is straight forward. 10 (in the first position) + 10 (in the second position) is 20 times he pains the DIGIT 8.
He paints the NUMBER 8 once. Final answer.
20 times.
He doesnt have to paint any at all. He WAS hired to paint them… Signifying he already has painted them.
I don’t know Andy. I just hired a contractor to do some work on my roof. He can tell all his friends and family right now that he WAS hired on Wednesday Oct 21. That’s when we signed the contract and I have him a deposit. He starts working Monday. Maybe though… there are no rules to riddles :)
Crabman, you are today’s winner!
20 times – 8,18,28,38,48,58,68,78,98,80,81,82,83,84,85,86,87,88,88,89
Thanks Dude, but I must decline. My final and current answer is still that although he paints the DIGIT 8 twenty times, he only painted the NUMBER 8 once. As I said though, I didn’t manually count, it just jumped out at me how many times each DIGIT between 2 & 9 would appear in each position.
I pass today’s point to CJS
All in good fun people, no disrespect intended. I did say final answer :) There are no rules to riddles, and you should never get caught up on a technicality like the words number vs digit. The correct answer is always and only what the person who presents the riddle says it is. Thanks for all you do Dude.
Thank you Crabman, you are indeed a gentleman.
I’ll bite: 11? too simple to be right.
ah yes, I left out all those between 81-89……..I’m hungry..thinking on an empty stomach produces wrong thinking….
