Nailed It

Nailed It
When Rodger was six years old he hammered a nail into his favorite tree to mark his height.
Five years later at age eleven , Rodger returned to see how much higher the nail was.

If the tree grew by ten inches each year, how much higher would the nail be?

  • Frank

It will be a the same height as 5 years ago,as trees grow outwards.

  • Jasmine

It would stay the same, wouldn’t it?

  • Frank, you are today’s winner!
The nail would be at the same height since trees grow at their tops.

  • Margot

the same height…though i think there’s a little upward growth of the trunk.

  • Crabman

Margot, for the record, there is no upward growth of the trunk. Only a specific type of cell division causes grown in trees and these are in the tips of roots and branches.

The only way the nail would be measured at a different hight is if the ground level changed by there being more or less matterial/soil.
