Flying V

My son and I were walking through a field one day when, in the distance, we noticed a flock of geese flying in the distance. They were flying in the familiar “V” formation sometimes referred to as a skein. My son asked me, “how come the one side is always shorter than the other?” I told him the answer was simple. Do you know why?
